Background: Tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (TNFR2), often referred to as CD120b and tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 1B (TNFRSF1B), is one of two membrane receptors that binds TNFα. This protein and TNF-receptor 1 create a heterocomplex that recruits two anti-apoptotic proteins, c-IAP1 and c-IAP2, which have E3 ubiquitin ligase activity.

Targeting TNRF2 in tumor cells has been linked to increased tumor cell mortality and reduced tumor cell growth progression. Breast cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, and kidney cancer all exhibit increased TNFR2 expression. The expression of TNRF2 in tumor cells has been linked to late-stage cancer.
