Background: Tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1), often referred to as CD120a and tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 1A (TNFRSF1A), is a common membrane receptor that binds TNFα. This receptor activates NF-κB, mediates apoptosis, and regulates inflammation.


Mutations in the TNFRSF1A gene are associated with an increased risk of multiple sclerosis. Serum TNFRSF1A levels are raised in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, with higher levels associated with more severe psychotic symptoms. High serum levels are also linked to cognitive impairment and dementia.
