Background: Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), referred to as CD279 and PDCD1, is a type I membrane protein that belongs to the extended CD28/CTLA-4 family of T cell regulators. T cells and pro-B cells express PD-1, a cell surface receptor from the immunoglobulin superfamily. PD-1 interacts two ligands from the B7 family, PD-L1 and PD-L2. IFN-γ therapy induces expression of PD-L1 in practically all murine tumor cell lines, including PA1 myeloma, P815 mastocytoma, and B16 melanoma cells. PD-L2 expression is more restricted, occurring mostly in DCs and a few tumor lines.

PD-1 and its ligands inhibit immunological responses.
