Background: The human folate receptor 1 (FOLR1), also known as folate receptor gamma (FRα), binds to folic acid and its derivatives, which is critical throughout fetal development. FOLR1 is part of the folate receptor (FOLR) family. Members of this family have a high affinity for folic acid and various reduced folic acid derivatives, and they facilitate the delivery of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to cell interiors.

FOLR1 can be overexpressed in a variety of epithelial malignancies, including ovarian, breast, renal, lung, colorectal, and brain. Antibodies to FOLR1 are being developed for use in targeted therapeutics.
